The waiter sets down champagne nobody ordered, at a figure nobody quotes. The stranger pays, because that is what a man does when the lights are low and a pretty woman is thirsty.

Keeping him buying is her whole line of work.

She is a “party girl” or bar girl, shortened to “b-girl”.

The waiters knew their part, too. They quit bringing change. They let a man drink past his money, and when the money was gone they walked him out to the banquette and left him there like a parcel set out for the morning.

Some nights, to hurry the math, a hand tipped a sedative into the man’s glass. On Bourbon Street they called it slipping a mickey.

Robert Dunn Jr. came down from Nashville and walked into the Latin Quarter Club, flashing new 50 dollar bills, making himself a mark. That New Year’s morning in 1950, the police said, one of the club’s b-girls slipped him Dunn a mickey, a dose large enough to kill.

He never woke up.

We do not know her name. The newspapers remember the club, the city Dunn came from, the day he died, and the drug that killed him, but they go quiet on the woman who poured the fatal dose.

Someone in that club knew her. No one said.

The papers did not spend their grief on the man. A wealthy out-of-town visitor dead on Bourbon Street was a nightmare of publicity, and the alarm that rose was an alarm about a lost customer.

None of it surprised the men who ran the street.

The b-girl racket was old news by 1950.

In 1945 the United States Brewers’ Foundation, anxious to keep beer respectable, cut off four Bourbon Street clubs for their part in it, the Moulin Rouge and the Puppy House among them. Within a month the clubs were back in good standing and the drinks kept coming.

The law tried too, after its fashion.

Before the 1949 Sugar Bowl, the police superintendent announced a cleanup, named the date the inspectors would come, and handed the street a week’s notice. The sweep charged exactly one club. At a press conference, when the superintendent assured reporters the nightclub owners agreed to cooperate, the audience laughed.

So when a tourist turned up dead, City Hall reached for the only instrument it trusted. It formed a committee.

Mayor deLesseps Morrison was a young veteran with a winning smile and a well-cut suit, elected in 1946 as the man who would scrub the old sins off New Orleans and make it presentable to industry.

Within months of his election, the mayor seated a seventeen-member citizens’ commission to study vice in the Quarter.

Two of its members owned Bourbon Street nightclubs. One was Owen Brennan. The other was Gaspar Gulotta.

They called Gulotta the Little Mayor of Bourbon Street, a small man who kept the peace on the street and, when peace required it, kept it with his fists.

When there were fresh complaints of b-drinking in Gulotta’s own club, Thomas Schniedau of the state alcohol board said plainly that such a man had no place on a commission against vice.

Morrison kept him on. “I have no apologies whatsoever for appointing him,” the mayor told the press.

The commission heard testimony and produced suggestions. The rackets it studied carried on in the same rooms, and within a year Morrison shelved the effort for the televised Kefauver hearings and never fully returned to it.

There was a plainer reason the cleanups never took. In 1953 the city’s own planners put the French Quarter’s tourist trade at thirty-six million dollars a year. A street earning that much money does not get closed.

It gets a committee.

Then an outsider read the Quarter the way Robert Dunn never lived to.

A separate body, the Metropolitan Crime Commission, hired Aaron Kohn, a former FBI agent fresh from dismantling the Chicago police on paper, to investigate the New Orleans department. His report came down in 1954. It recorded 166 bars in the Quarter and found that since Dunn’s death “the same conditions, in many of the same places, and usually under control of the same individuals” still existed.

Kohn’s investigators watched Frankie Ray, the master of ceremonies at the Casino Royale, hand cash to a patrolman. They heard a dancer billed as “the Georgia Bombshell” describe how her manager waved off the wages he owed her. The police, Ray reminded her, were on the side of the club.

That was the machine that killed Robert Dunn.

It did not break down. It was made to run exactly that way.

Read the report closely and its priorities surface. Kohn’s committee set the “use of knock-out drops” down in the same line as “lewd and sexually suggestive dancing,” as though a drug that stopped a man’s heart and a woman’s hips on a stage were equal offenses.

City politicians needed a distraction.

Across the decade that followed, its district attorneys arrested dancers by the dozen for the shimmy and the grind. They hauled the Cat Girl into court over a number called “Tom Cat Fever” and carried confiscated photographs in as evidence, proof of the Quarter’s ruin.

The b-girls who emptied a dead man’s glass kept their jobs.

Police arrested Caroline “Lucy” Cotta, 23, and Jacqueline Livermoore, 30, and charged them with leaving the state to avoid questioning in death of Robert Dunn Jr. Only Cotta eventually stood trial, along with bartender Carlo Quartararo.

The two admitted moving the body from a cot in the girl’s dressing room and back to a table in the club. No one could recall what happened to Dunn’s wallet, rings, and watch. They also could not name the person who gave Dunn the knockout drops.

Both defendants walked when the coroner, Dr. Grenes Cole, testified that Dunn died of “a heart stroke” unrelated to his chloral hydrate overdose as if there was a regular dose.

Now, seventy-six years later, the “party girl” who gave Dunn the drugs has never been identified.

Robert Dunn Jr. came to New Orleans with money in his pocket and went home in a box, and the club owners responsible sat, that spring, on the very commission assembled to study it.

Someone knew who drugged Dunn, but it was the one question nobody in the courtroom would answer.

It is July 16, 1958. Grosch is chief investigator for the district attorney, and for two weeks he has worked Bourbon Street, hauling dancers off in pairs. He tells the reporters that her number, “Tom Cat Fever,” is the filthiest thing he has ever seen, and he is a man who has been around.

Lilly Christine tells them something different. She is an exotic dancer, not a stripteaser. She wears nothing on that stage more daring than the costumes in Peep Show on Broadway, and she never takes it all off.

One of them is about to be proven right by the Supreme Court of Louisiana. It will not be Grosch.

They called her the Cat Girl, for the slow, stalking way she moved. Offstage she was every bit as deliberate. In April 1958, months before her arrest, she had sued two Bourbon Street lounges for billing their own dancers as “Cat Girls,” because she had carried that name since 1948 and held a service mark on it from the United States Patent Office.

The woman Grosch arrested for a dance had already taught herself to use the law. That would matter.

The summer of 1958 was a season of crusades. A few months earlier the city had elected a new district attorney, Richard Dowling, who told the press he had no power to “close the gates on Bourbon Street or anywhere else” and swore he had ordered no arrests. Then he sent Grosch out after “dozens of complaints,” he said, but only after holding off as long as he could.

Grosch needed no second invitation. He loved a reporter and a headline. On the Fourth of July he stalked the strip hunting lewd dancing in the act. The barkers had read the papers and seen him coming a mile off, and the holiday yielded almost nothing.

A week later he tore down posters by the armload, forty-four life-sized photographs he judged unfit for the public. Each one he had photographed again, as evidence. “They must stop that teasing and that filthy dancing,” he announced.

By the time he reached Lilly Christine at the 500 Club, he and his men had arrested fifty-two dancers and barkers in a fortnight. Most of the charges Dowling let quietly drop. Hers he kept.

The state set her bond at fifteen hundred dollars, half again what the other dancers paid. An assistant district attorney named A. I. Kleinfeldt had recommended the figure, perhaps because a woman who had already hauled rivals into court over a nickname was not the sort to plead and go home. Arrested beside her were the 500 Club’s master of ceremonies, Wally Allen, and its manager, Felix Montez, charged with aiding a performance the state called “lewd and lascivious, filthy and indecent.”

The charge against her was obscenity, under the third paragraph of a Louisiana statute that forbade any “act of lewdness or indecency, grossly scandalous and tending to debauch the morals and manners of the people.”

Her lawyers went at the words themselves. They pointed the court to two earlier Louisiana rulings, one holding that “lewd and indecent act” was too vague to name a crime, another that “lewd dancing” was too shapeless to define an offense.

On October 1, 1958, Judge J. Bernard Cocke of the Orleans Parish Criminal Court agreed and threw the case out. The law leaned on the word “act,” he wrote, and “act” was a far harder thing to pin down than, say, a dance.

Dowling appealed to the state Supreme Court. “If I think the law is being violated,” he said, “I’ll raid them again.”

That August the Times-Picayune ran an item marveling that law clerks across Louisiana were now “burning the midnight oil,” researching what the statutes had to say about “the vigor, and direction, with which the pelvis may be tossed.”

The first answer from the high court went Dowling’s way. In November 1959 the justices split five to two. They revived the charge and sent the Cat Girl back to face trial. Justice Walter Hamlin wrote that a dance was a performance and that “lewdness” needed no further defining, since to elaborate would be “nothing but tautology or redundancy.”

Chief Justice John Fournet dissented. To let each lower court decide for itself what counted as lewd, he warned, would leave a citizen “no certain or understandable rule and no uniform standard of conduct” to know what the law asked of him.

Christine asked for a rehearing. She got it, and on February 15, 1960, Fournet’s dissent became the majority. A criminal law, the chief justice wrote, must define its offense so plainly “that any reader having ordinary intelligence will know” whether his conduct breaks it. Louisiana’s obscenity statute did not, and the court struck it down.

A stripper had made the State of Louisiana admit, in writing, that its obscenity law could not say what it forbade.

Dowling took it hard. The justices, he complained, had “put the stamp of approval on Bourbon Street,” and every pending case went “out the window with the obscenity law.”

For years the newspapers had treated the women on those stages as scenery, interchangeable and nameless. Lilly Christine, who had been to the Patent Office before she ever rode in Grosch’s wagon, had shown they could fight the state and win.

The morning after the ruling, the police superintendent promised to keep the dancers in line with city ordinances instead. The Times-Picayune answered with a cartoon: an officer holding a book marked “City Anti-Obscenity Ordinances,” reaching to cover a dancer who has just peeled off another marked “Defective State Anti-Obscenity Laws.”

The caption asked the only question left on Bourbon Street.

Can she strip this off too?

The road is a short stretch of blacktop northwest of Greensburg, between Louisiana Highways 10 and 43.

It is also the road where Keith Madison Sr. vanished, more than five years before.

Deputies recovered the remains and sent them to the LSU FACES Lab. With help from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab, technicians gave the bones a name.

The name was Madison’s.

On Monday, the St. Helena Parish Sheriff’s Office said the cause of death is undetermined. The same office has asked the Louisiana State Police to assist.

After five years, the rural road that swallowed Keith Madison has given him back, and no one can yet say how he died.

I first heard his name in 2022.

His daughter called me and asked Bayou Justice to shine some light on a father who had walked out of his own neighborhood a year earlier and never come back.

He was 46 then, a white man of 5-foot-7 and 179 pounds, with gray hair and hazel eyes. The last day his family saw him, he wore a black zip-up hoodie and light blue jeans.

The Sheriff’s Office dates his disappearance to February 1, 2021. His family says they last saw him on February 20. The record does not explain the three weeks in between.

Greensburg is the seat of St. Helena Parish, one of the more rural corners of South Louisiana. The 2010 census counted 11,203 people in the whole parish; by 2020, the number had slipped to 10,920. It borders Tangipahoa and Livingston Parishes, but it keeps to itself, more pine and pasture than town.

It is the kind of place where a man can step off a short road and disappear into the tree line.

So the Sheriff’s Office went looking for him in the trees.

Deputies borrowed one of Livingston Parish’s two helicopters and flew it low over the woods while others walked rescue dogs through the secluded neighborhood below.

The search found nothing.

When I wrote about him that year, Madison was still missing, and his family still hoped he might one day walk back through the door.

Then it happened again.

On January 9, 2022, another man vanished from the same Hall and Lindsey Road area, and the Sheriff’s Office had to ask whether one road could lose two men by chance.

Steven Virgil Callison was 65 and wore a prosthetic leg. He depended on medical equipment, and he left it behind when he walked out his door.

Deputies searched again, by land and by air, the same ground they had walked for Madison. This time they found a body.

Searchers reached Callison at 10:54 on the Friday morning of January 21, 2022, eleven days after he went missing.

“We remained hopeful,” the Sheriff’s Office said that day. “This is not the outcome we were praying for.” Sheriff Nathaniel Williams offered his condolences to the Callison family.

Investigators believe Callison died of natural causes. His case looked nothing like Madison’s, and the deputies ruled the two unrelated.

That left them back where they had started, with a missing man and a $4,000 Crime Stoppers reward no one came to claim.

Picture the last time Krista sees her father whole.

It is Valentine’s Day, 2021. He is quiet. He leaves fast, and he looks stressed, which is not like him.

“He wasn’t himself,” she told me later.

The frustration was Madison’s own, and he had named it. He told his family he was tired of the constant arguing between his stepdaughter and her boyfriend, a couple who lived under his roof.

“He told us he wanted [the boyfriend] to leave,” Krista said, “but he said [my stepsister] would leave with him, and my stepmom wouldn’t like that at all.”

So Madison kept the peace, and kept his unhappiness, in a full house.

Then came the night his daughter cannot forget.

“My stepmom, Anita, called after midnight,” Krista said. “She was panicked, saying my dad was gone. She said he left his dip and took his gun, and she didn’t know where he went.”

A man takes his gun and leaves his tobacco on the counter. Make of that what you will.

By the time Krista and I spoke, the house on that road stood empty. Her stepmother and stepsister had moved out after the stepsister and the boyfriend split up. Her half-brother had joined the Marines and shipped off to boot camp in South Carolina.

A relative reported this week that Hurricane Ida tore the roof from the home shortly before I spoke to Krista.

“He joined the Marines after our father died,” Krista said.

She said died. Not disappeared.

A daughter knew what the record would take five more years to confirm.

Here is the question the State Police inherit.

Helicopters crossed those woods in 2021. Cadaver dogs worked the same neighborhood, nose to the ground, animals trained to scent the dead. A second search swept the same area for Callison weeks later and found him.

Yet what was left of Keith Madison stayed in that tree line until a search party walked up on it this May, a short walk from his own door.

Either he was not in those woods when the dogs came through, or he was, and an exhaustive search passed him by. Neither answer sits easy.

We know now where Keith Madison ended up. We still do not know how he got there. The coroner has not ruled, and after five years in the open, the bones may never say.

Somebody on that road saw something. After five years, the State Police are waiting to hear it.

I struck out and felt my fist meet a jaw like the corner of a packing-case. He grunted — a deep, foreign sound — and his hands found my throat. I have been in tight places before, in Afghanistan and since; but for one long, ugly moment I believed my account was closing there in the fog.

Then there were quick feet upon the step, and Holmes’s voice, very hard. “Let him go, or I fire.”

The man froze, and I realized for the first time, the man quite literally had a monkey on his back.

For an instant his face hung close to mine — heavy, weathered, fair-bearded, the pale eyes wild with what I took then for murder and understand now to have been grief. Then he flung me from him with contemptuous ease, struck aside Holmes’s arm before the pistol could speak, and was gone, swallowed whole by the fog. We heard his boots upon the kerb a moment, and then nothing at all.

Holmes raised me by the arm. “You are not hurt?”

“Only my dignity,” said I, feeling at my collar. “Holmes, who in the name of —”

“A question I am not yet in a position to answer.” He was already stooping, and his fingers closed upon some small thing that had fallen to the wet stones in the struggle.

He held it to the light of the doorway: a cheap locket of foreign make, sprung open by the fall. Within was the likeness of a young woman, very fair, looking gravely out with her hands clasped before her. I had never seen her in life. But I had stood within a yard of her not eight hours since, where she lay upon the floor of a jade-green cab.

“You know her,” I said.

“I begin to.” He snapped the locket shut and dropped it into his waistcoat pocket. The grey eyes, when they met mine, held no fear — only that bright, far-off attention I had learned to read as the first loosening of a knot.

“Go home, Watson. Lock your door, and oblige me by carrying your revolver to-morrow. Say nothing of this to a living soul before noon.” He turned back toward the lighted stair. “We are not, it seems, the only persons in London who wish to know who killed that young woman.”

I left him there, and went home through the fog more thoughtful, and a good deal more watchful, than I had come.

My morning did not improve my understanding of the matter. Holmes had, while I slept, despatched a note requesting that I call upon Fenton’s establishment in the Kingsland Road and make what enquiries I could regarding the woman who had boarded Williams’s cab.

It was a delicate enough business for a man presenting himself as a private enquirer rather than a police officer, but the proprietor, a round, obliging fellow named Greaves, confirmed without much prompting that a young woman had left his premises at shortly after eight that morning. She had arrived late the previous evening, he said, taken a room for the night, and departed early carrying a single bag.

She had seemed anxious. She had asked him, before leaving, whether he knew of a reliable cab company. He had not remarked upon her name at the time, and the register showed only the signature J. Krüger in a neat, Continental hand.

I wired the name to Holmes from the post office in the Kingsland Road, received no reply, and made my way to Baker Street by noon.

I had not expected the audience that awaited me. Upon the four chairs before the fire sat Inspectors Gregson and Lestrade, the cabman John Williams — pale but composed — and a spare, plain-clothed man who proved to be Detective-Sergeant Collins of the Finger-Print Branch at New Scotland Yard, sent by the Commissioner to speak to the evidence.

Holmes stood at the mantelpiece with his back to the fire, and in the doorway, just entering as I arrived, was a fifth figure: a broad-shouldered man of fifty with a Norfolk accent and the measured deliberateness of someone who does not hurry and is not hurried.

“Ah, Watson. Pray be seated.” Holmes reached to the mantle and produced the photograph — the work, I now understood, of the newspaper photographer he had summoned the previous day. He passed it to the sergeant. “Gentlemen, I shall ask you to direct your attention to the mark I have made upon the floor of the cab.”

A small X, in pencil, indicated a point upon the near footboard. Beside it, in the original position recorded by the camera, was the crumpled shape of a bloodied lace scarf of fine quality.

“Inspector Gregson,” said Holmes, “that pink-coloured scarf was taken from the floor of the cab in that position. It has not been moved?”

“It has not.”

“Sergeant Collins. You have had the opportunity to examine it.”

The sergeant straightened slightly. “I have. The divisional surgeon recovered metal filings from the fabric — consistent with a blade recently cleaned or sharpened. And the fingermarks upon the scarf are the woman’s own, and no other’s.”

“Precisely.” Holmes set down the photograph and began to pace, slowly, before the fire. “Mr. Williams. You stated that you heard a single cry from within the cab as you slowed for the corner at Dorset Street. You did not hear the sound of a struggle — no impact, no second voice?”

“Only the one cry, sir.”

“Quite so.” Holmes stopped. “Then I put it to you, gentlemen, that there was no murder.”

The silence lasted perhaps four seconds.

“I submit that the sequence of events was as follows. The woman entered the cab carrying, concealed within that scarf, an English dagger. She had brought it deliberately and with purpose. As the cab slowed for the corner, she rose from her seat — a hansom, as you are aware, is a two-wheeled vehicle, and it pitches forward sharply upon braking. She rose with the knife in hand at precisely the wrong moment.

“The forward pitch drove her against the front-board. The handle of the dagger struck the wooden facing — you will observe the fresh scar in the photograph at the point I have also marked — and the blade was driven inward. The cab then rocked backward, as hansoms do upon completing a stop, and returned her to the seat. The scarf, already loosened, fell to the floor as her hand opened.”

“Holmes,” said Lestrade slowly, “you are saying she stabbed herself.”

“I am saying the cab stabbed her, which is a somewhat different statement. She did not intend it. She intended, I believe, something rather different.” Holmes looked at the fifth man in the room. “Inspector Martin. I think this is your moment.”

The Norfolk man settled his large hands upon his knees. He had, about him, the patience of the countryside and the precision of someone who had thought a great deal about what he was going to say.

“I am Martin of the Norfolk Constabulary,” said he. “I came as Mr. Holmes requested, and I’ll tell you plainly what I know, and let the facts speak for themselves as best they can.

“In the last week of June, in the summer of 1902, a German couple named Otto and Charlotte Krüger were found dead at their farmhouse outside Cawston, in Norfolk. They had come to England some twelve years before and were well regarded thereabouts — quiet people, churchgoing, no enemies that any of their neighbours could name. They were killed indoors, in the night, by a man who broke in through the kitchen window. It was a violent business and I will spare this company the particulars.

“We arrested a man within the week. He had been seen upon the Cawston road the evening before the murders, and a farmer’s boy identified him at the subsequent hearing. He was a Frenchman who had been working seasonal labour in the county. The evidence against him was considerable, and the jury had no difficulty. He was sentenced to death.

“He escaped from Norwich Gaol eleven days before the date set for his execution. He got out through the laundry, I am sorry to say, with the assistance of a fellow prisoner who has since himself been tried. He has not been found from that day to this.” Martin paused. “The Krügers had one child. A daughter, Johanna, who was at the time of the murders employed as a governess in Hannover. She was brought back for the trial. She gave evidence. She saw the man convicted.”

The room was very still. The fire shifted.

“She saw him convicted,” said Holmes quietly, “and she saw him escape. And then she came to London. With a knife in a pink lace scarf.”

“She came to find him,” said Martin. “I have no doubt of it.”

“Nor have I.” Holmes turned to the cabman.

John Williams had not moved. He was staring into the fire with an expression that had changed, by some imperceptible degree, from the blank composure of the frightened innocent into something harder and more careful.

“Mr. Williams,” said Holmes, with a particular deliberateness, “when first we spoke, I asked whether you might have a French or German connexion. You shook your head.”

Williams said nothing.

“The name ‘Williams’ is English enough. But you will recall that I despatched a telegram last night to Inspector Martin. I asked him, among other things, for the convicted man’s name.”

Holmes reached into his waistcoat pocket and produced a folded paper. “His name was John Guillaume — pronounced, in the French manner, Gee-om.“ He looked at Williams. “You will perhaps not require me to supply the English translation.”

There was a moment — very brief — in which John Williams appeared to calculate. Then he turned to Holmes and said, in a voice entirely without expression, “I wonder if I might trouble you for a glass of water. The fire is very warm.”

Holmes walked to the basin. I observed, through the corner of my eye, that as he filled the glass he also turned the key in the lock of the door and placed it quietly in his watch pocket. He returned, passed the water to Williams, and resumed his place at the mantelpiece.

“I believe, Sergeant,” said Holmes pleasantly, “that the Commissioner wished to know why the woman had drawn the dagger. I think Inspector Martin has answered that. The remaining question — the one Scotland Yard has been asking for sixteen months — is considerably simpler.”

Williams tossed the water into the flames. The fire erupted in a cloud of hissing white smoke that billowed into the room with the sudden ferocity of a breaking wave.

In the chaos that followed I was aware of crashing, of coughing, of someone’s elbow finding my ribs — and then, as the smoke thinned and the figures about me resolved themselves, I saw John Williams standing at the door, his hand upon the latch, and Sherlock Holmes standing two paces behind him with my own service revolver levelled at the man’s back.

“The door is locked,” said Holmes. “Inspectors, I believe your prisoner is ready to be collected.”

Gregson said nothing as he led the man away. Lestrade said very little. Detective-Sergeant Collins pressed Holmes’s hand at the door and undertook to tell Sir Edward that the reputation was not misplaced — which Holmes received with a small, gracious inclination of the head that managed to suggest both thanks and the opinion that the reputation had, if anything, understated the case.

When they had all gone, and Baker Street had returned to its usual November quiet, Holmes retrieved the brandy from my old desk and poured two glasses without being asked.

“It was Johanna Krüger’s own dagger,” he said, handing me mine. “She had read of his escape in the English press — that was the cutting she carried in her muff, you will recall — and had tracked Guillaume to London, where he had been foolish enough to return to the cab trade he knew.

“She had obtained the knife with the intention of settling the matter herself, outside the reach of a court from which he had once already escaped. She was, by all appearances, a composed and purposeful young woman.” He settled into his armchair. “The cab was a more exact instrument of justice than she was, as it turned out.”

“She died for nothing, then.”

“On the contrary. Guillaume is taken. The law will hang him for two murders; it cannot touch him for the manner of his taking. But I confess I find something not entirely unsatisfying in the arithmetic.”

“And the big man in the fog with a beast on his shoulder?” I asked. “The one who very nearly throttled me in your own doorway. He troubles my sleep, I own, more than all the rest of it.”

Holmes drew the little locket from his pocket and turned it in the firelight.

“He troubled mine, until I understood him — and a sadder explanation I have not met in some while.”

He passed it across, open, and again the fair grave face looked up at me.

“Her name is engraved within; and beneath it, in the same hand, a man’s. Friedrich, the organ grinder. They were betrothed in Hannover. When she left her post upon her errand he followed — to aid her, or to turn her from it, we shall never now know — and lost her in the city. Then he came upon the end of it: a whistle, a crowd, a green cab of a livery he would not forget, driven off at the gallop. He could not follow on foot; but a man may trace a numbered cab, and by nightfall it had brought him to this door.”

“Ourselves,” I said.

“Ourselves. And there he kept his watch, until you came down. In his mind, Watson, you and I were the men who had killed her.” Holmes closed the locket gently. “There was no murderer to find — there never had been; but you cannot tell a man so with his hands at your throat. I had a quiet word put about where such a man would hear it — the German mission, the shipping offices — and this morning he came in of his own accord, before the others, and I told him the whole of it. He did not weep, which was somehow worse. He thanked me very correctly, and asked only that the locket be returned to him when the law had done with it.”

Holmes laid it upon the table between us. “A man may hunt a phantom across half of Europe, and be undone in the end by a single fact kindly delivered.”

He regarded his glass for a moment. “Hafiz, I think, puts it better than I can: ‘Even the wisest plan is carried out, in the end, by the hand of God.’ The Sufi poets were often more sensible than the courts.”

He stretched his long legs toward the fire.

The fog had thickened outside; the lamps in the street were nothing but orange smears against the glass. It was, I thought, exactly the atmosphere in which the whole adventure had begun.

“Now, Watson,” said Holmes, without looking up. “About Mrs. Watson.”

My heart performed a brief but determined interruption of its regular duties. I waited.

“I must apologise,” he continued, “for causing you to miss your luncheon yesterday. It was inconsiderate of me. Please assure her it was entirely my fault.”

“Holmes,” I said, after a moment, “you know perfectly well she and I are — “

“I know that you hired a woman to press your cuffs, that you have walked rather than taken any cab for the past several weeks, and that you are thinner than you were at the wedding.”

He glanced across at me then, and the grey eyes held, for once, no trace of the analytical engine — only the expression of a man who has known his friend a very long time.

“I know that you came here yesterday afternoon because you needed to. And I know that whatever is between you and Mrs. Watson is not my business unless you choose to make it so.”

He turned back to the fire. “I merely wished to say that Baker Street has not changed.”

I looked at the familiar walls, the disordered bookshelves, the spider’s web still under construction in the cold grate, the two lamps burning steadily upon the mantle.

“No,” I said. “It has not.”

We sat for a while in silence, the fire doing its slow work between us, and it seemed to me, in that comfortable and companionable quiet, that there were a great many varieties of fidelity in the world, and that not the least of them was this.

I thought in these times of artificial intelligence and too-perfect editing, you might appreciate a blast from our crime fiction past.

The following short story is a Sherlock Holmes pastiche written in the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

In the 1980s Sherlock Holmes’ stories were under copyright. To publish a story, I had to seek approval from the Conan Doyle estate in London, but they directed me to an American for final approval.

John Bennett Shaw (1913–1994) was one of the most legendary figures in modern Sherlockian history. He was an American businessman, scholar, and the most prolific collector of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia and literature in the world.

Famous for his warm hospitality, sharp wit, and his typed reviews, Shaw wrote me in 1984 saying he truly loved my story and that I had captured the relationship between Holmes and Watson better than most he had read.

When Shaw died 12 years later at age 80, my manuscript was found among his possessions. Today, it is permanently housed at the University of Minnesota Library with the rest of his papers.

What follows is that story, the Adventure of the Jade Hansom.

From the memoirs of Dr. John Watson of London…

It is not without reluctance that I set down the particulars of the adventure I have elected to call the Jade Hansom.

The matter touches upon events in my private life which I had sooner keep from the public record. Yet the case itself is singular enough, and the conduct of my friend Sherlock Holmes throughout it sufficiently remarkable, that I should do both the man and the truth a disservice were I to let it moulder unchronicled in the battered tin dispatch-box I keep at my bank.

I shall therefore record it faithfully. The personal portions must be excused by the professional interest of what surrounds them.

It was in the autumn of the year 1903 that the incident occurred — a season of low fogs and early dusks, when Baker Street wore its most familiar and melancholy facade. My second marriage, contracted some seven months before, had by that time fallen upon troubled ground.

Upon a grey Thursday afternoon I found myself walking the cobblestones of the Marylebone Road in a state of some interior disorder, my worries turning over and over without rest. I had told no one of my difficulties. Least of all had I told Holmes, whose powers of perception I both admired and, upon that particular afternoon, quietly dreaded.

I had not visited 221B since the wedding. Holmes had written twice; I had answered once, inadequately.

It was guilt as much as longing that turned my steps at last toward Baker Street, and as the familiar black door came into view beneath its transom of yellow gaslight, I confess that my pulse quickened in a fashion that would have interested me professionally had it been another man’s wrist upon which I laid my finger.

Mrs. Hudson received me with the warmth of a woman who had been expecting the visit for some months. She informed me that Holmes was upstairs and in one of his brooding humours, which is to say, I understood from long experience, that his mind churned at full pressure upon some question he had not yet chosen to share with the world.

I mounted the stairs quietly, resolved that he should not read me at a glance.

I had taken the precaution of having my cuffs freshly pressed by a woman I had hired for the purpose, and I had walked, not ridden, so that no cabman’s receipt should betray the direction from which I came. I had, in short, done my best.

I opened the door.

Holmes stood at the window with his back to me, his long, lean figure a dark brushstroke against the pale November sky. He did not turn.

“You have had a trying seven months, Watson,” said he, “and you have walked rather than ridden, which suggests that you wished the exercise more than you required the speed. Pray come in and sit by the fire. The teapot is fresh.”

I deposited my hat and coat on the rack and did as I was told, reflecting for perhaps the ten-thousandth time upon the futility of attempting to conceal anything from Sherlock Holmes.

The room was as I had left it, and the familiarity of it was, I own, something of a comfort. The chemical bench occupied its corner, a wilderness of retorts and specimen-jars. The great roll-top desk squatted opposite, buried under correspondence which had apparently reproduced in my absence. The still bookshelves lined the walls in cheerful disorder.

Upon the antique birch mantelpiece stood the two oil-lamps, a heap of sheet music, the black clay pipe, and what appeared to be a fresh manila notebook — Holmes’s handwriting visible upon its cover.

A wood-fire crackled in the grate, and the four familiar chairs were arranged about it. I settled into the nearest straight-back with a sigh that I had not intended to be quite so audible.

Holmes turned from the window and lowered himself into the rocking chair he had imported from America — “there is no finer grain than Louisiana cypress,” he had once informed me with characteristic authority — and reached for his cherry-wood pipe. He filled it slowly, watching me with those pale grey eyes that seemed, in the firelight, to see rather more than the situation warranted.

“I have, in your absence,” said he, “attempted a modest literary experiment. You have so often pressed me to chronicle a case in my own hand that I at last relented. There is a notebook upon the mantle. I call it ‘The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier.’

I should value your editorial opinion — not your sentimentality, mark you, but your professional judgment as to whether I have managed to render the salient points without undue embellishment.” He paused. “You may embellish it afterwards if you feel you cannot help yourself.”

“I am honoured, Holmes.” I reached for the notebook, genuinely moved, for it was a concession I had pressed him upon for years without the slightest yielding.

I had been reading for perhaps twenty minutes — the account was methodical to a fault, but not without its austere interest — when the fire began to sink, and Holmes, who had been studying the construction of a spider’s web within the dormant portion of the grate with the detached absorption of a naturalist, suddenly raised his head.

I had noticed nothing. Then, a moment later, I heard it: the pounding of hooves upon the bricks, hard and rapid, drawing nearer with a purpose quite distinct from the ordinary commerce of a Thursday afternoon.

Holmes was at the window before I had set down the notebook. I joined him.

Below, a large hansom cab of a distinctive jade green colour rounded the bend at speed, rocking upon its springs, the driver’s whip cutting the air above his horse’s haunches. The animal’s iron shoes struck sparks from the wet cobblestones. Then, with an abruptness that set the cab lurching on its axle, the driver hauled upon the reins and brought the whole equipage to a shuddering halt before our door.

“It is the Courtney Company’s livery,” said Holmes, watching with that peculiar stillness he assumed when his mind was engaged. “They operate exclusively upon the northeastern side of the city. Whatever has brought that man to Baker Street, it is not a fare.”

The driver sprang from his perch.

He did not enter. Or rather — he did not enter immediately. He stood below for perhaps half a minute, and once I saw his face tip upward toward our lighted window, white and irresolute in the yellow fog. Then he disappeared inside the building.

“He is coming up,” said Holmes. “Observe him carefully when he enters, Watson. Say nothing for a moment.”

We returned to our chairs. I set aside the notebook. Several minutes passed in silence before the knock came — not the confident rap of a man with a clear conscience and a straightforward errand, but the tentative double-knock of someone who has rehearsed the gesture so many times that it has lost all spontaneity.

“Come,” said Holmes.

The door opened upon a man of middle height and powerful build, with the deep-set lines about the eyes of one accustomed to outdoor work in all weathers. His driving-coat was of good quality but much worn; his gloves, heavy leather affairs, showed the creasing of years upon the right hand and were scarcely marked upon the left.

His boots carried a yellow clay quite distinct from the reddish mud of the Baker Street pavement, and there was a small, recent tear along the left lapel of his coat, consistent with a man who had taken a staircase in haste and caught himself upon a nail.

He held his hat before him in both hands and turned it by the brim. He was, I judged, between thirty-five and forty, and he was frightened.

Holmes looked at him for perhaps three seconds. Then:

“Pray sit down, Mister — ?”

“Williams, sir. John Williams.”

“Sit down, Mr. Williams. You have been driving a cab for the Courtney Company for, I should say, some eight or nine years. You came up these stairs at a run, though you have had second thoughts about every step. You are not a drinking man. And whatever has happened to you this morning has happened within the last two hours. Watson, perhaps you would be good enough to pour this gentleman some tea.”

Williams stared. His mouth opened once, then closed. “How do you —”

“The right glove tells me your trade and its tenure. The clay upon your boots is peculiar to the new excavation they have made by the chapel in the Kingsland Road — there is no other such cutting between there and the Park, and the Courtney Company, as I happen to know, stables on Bishopsgate.

You came up the stairs too quickly and caught your coat on the third-floor hook that Mrs. Hudson has been meaning to remove for six months.

Your hands are steady, your complexion ruddy and healthy, and there is no smell of spirits about you — so distress, not drink, accounts for your colour and your agitation. And the mud upon your wheels is still wet.” He waved a hand. “Sit down, man. Tell us what has occurred.”

Williams sat. He turned his hat three more times. Then he spoke.

“Mr. Holmes, I have killed no one. I want you to hear me say that before I say anything else, because I think no one else will believe it.”

“I have not yet formed an opinion upon the matter,” said Holmes pleasantly. “Pray begin at the beginning and omit nothing, however trifling it may appear.”

What followed was the account of a sufficiently strange morning.

Williams had been at his stand near Fenton’s establishment in the northeast quarter, waiting upon the subscribers of the Courtney Company’s private line, when a woman had approached him on foot.

She was youngish — he put her at five-and-twenty — and well-dressed, though the dress was not of London make; she had about her, he said, the look of someone who had been travelling and had not slept.

She had begged him in a low, urgent voice to carry her across the city, explaining that she had only just arrived and knew no one and had missed the omnibus. He had told her, as the rules required, that the line was private, for subscribers only. She had pressed him. She had named a fare that was more than the usual tariff. He had, in the end, agreed.

She did not speak during the drive. He had watched her once through the communication trap — she had it shut — and seen her sitting very upright, her hands clasped in her lap, looking straight ahead. He had thought nothing of it. Nervous women in hansom cabs were not uncommon.

It was when he had slowed to take the corner at Dorset Street that he heard the cry — a single, sharp sound, not quite a scream. He had pulled up at once, jumped down, and opened the cab door.

The woman was slumped against the back panel. There was blood. A constable appeared at the far end of the street at a run, and Williams, with the damning sight of a dead woman in his cab and no story that anyone was likely to credit, had done what a frightened and not very logical man will sometimes do. He fled.

He had driven hard, and he had come to the one address in London where he thought he might find help.

“You came here directly?” asked Holmes.

“I did, sir. I heard you was a fair man.”

Holmes was silent for a moment. His fingertips came together beneath his chin. “You mentioned that the woman spoke to you briefly before entering the cab. Did she give a name? A destination?”

“No name, sir. She said she wanted to go across — to the Marylebone side. That was all.”

“And her accent?”

Williams considered. “English, sir. But not London English, if you follow me. More from the country.”

“Quite so.” Holmes regarded him a moment longer. “One question more, Mr. Williams, and it may strike you as an idle one. Have you yourself any connexion with France, or with Germany — a relation abroad, perhaps, or family come from across the water?”

Williams shook his head. “None, sir. Welsh on my father’s side, and London born.”

Holmes rose abruptly. “Watson, I shall want my lens and my coat. Mr. Williams, you will be good enough to accompany us downstairs. Do not speak to the driver of any other vehicle, should one be present, and do not, on any account, run. Running is the one indulgence I cannot permit you.”

We had been at the cab for no more than five minutes when Inspector Gregson of Scotland Yard arrived, two constables at his heels and a face that suggested he had hoped to find the hansom unattended.

He was a lean, fair man with an ambitious moustache, and he greeted Holmes with the species of wariness that long experience of being out-reasoned in public will produce in a Scotland Yard inspector.

Holmes scarcely looked up. He was upon his hands and knees upon the floor of the cab, his lens moving methodically across the footboard. He had already sat beside the body, studied the position of the woman’s hands, and — to the considerable agitation of the constables — deliberately pitched himself forward from the seat to measure, I supposed, the precise arc of the fall.

From the muff that lay in her lap he had also drawn a folded scrap of newsprint, much creased, as though it had been long carried and often read; this he glanced at for an instant and transferred, without a word, to his waistcoat pocket.

“You know something of this, Holmes,” said Gregson. It was not quite a question.

“I know that your two constables are posted unnecessarily, that the cab driver is not the man you are looking for in the sense you imagine, and that there is a bloodied scarf upon the floor of this cab that is considerably more interesting than it appears.”

Holmes emerged from the cab, brushing his knees. He held out nothing — no theory, no chain of reasoning. “I shall require until to-morrow noon.”

“You’ll require — Holmes, there’s a dead woman in that cab.”

“There is. And she will be no less dead at noon to-morrow, while whatever explanation I advance to-day will be considerably less reliable than one I advance after a night’s reflection.

“I suggest you remove the body to the mortuary, preserve the scarf and the floor-board exactly as they are, and bring a photographer to record the interior of the cab before anything else is disturbed.

“You have nothing to lose as the driver, Mr. Williams, has no ride home. Your men can see him home and see that he returns to-morrow.”

Holmes glanced at me and spoke in a whisper. “Watson, I wonder if you might send a telegram for me this evening. Address it to Inspector Martin of the Norfolk Constabulary. Mark it urgent.”

“Of course. What shall I say?”

“Say that I require him in Baker Street to-morrow at noon, and that the matter concerns Otto and Charlotte Krüger .”

It was the first time I had heard those names. The effect upon Holmes of his own mention of them was nothing — not a flicker. He turned back to Gregson and handed him a card.

“Have the Commissioner’s office informed, if you would. Sir Edward Henry has an interest in the forensic aspect of the case that I think he will find it worth his while to pursue.”

Then he folded his hands behind his back, nodded pleasantly to the assembled constables, and walked back toward the building without another word.

I caught him up on the staircase. “Holmes,” I said, “I must confess I have not the remotest idea what you are about.”

“No,” said he, not unkindly. “That is rather the point, my dear Watson.”

He said nothing further upon my return from the telegraph office — not a syllable, not a hint — though he sat up past two o’clock with his pipe and the commonplace-books. It was near that hour when I made my excuses and went down to find a cab for myself.

The fog had come down thick while we talked, and Baker Street was a tunnel of brown vapour in which the lamps swam like drowned moons. I had not gone twenty paces from the door when I knew myself to be not alone upon the pavement.

A shape detached itself from the area railings opposite — a big man, very broad across the shoulders, moving with a soft-footed haste that ill suited his bulk. I had time to think that no honest errand brought a man abroad on such a night.

Then he was upon me.

He is seventy-nine years old.

The strokes that began the previous January have hollowed something behind his eyes. He stands wide-shouldered and five feet three, the silver mane gone to white.

He is going home to Louisiana.

He returned to an empire that had not waited for him.

It had started on April 15, 1983, the day a federal judge dismissed the appeal and ordered him to begin serving immediately.

Two juries had convicted him in the BRILAB insurance fraud: Louisiana on August 4, 1981, then Los Angeles four months later. At seventy-three, Carlos Marcello faced seventeen years.

The Bureau of Prisons placed him at the US Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri. Minimum security, parklike grounds. After a year, they moved him.

The federal prison at Texarkana, Texas was level three. Harsh.

Carlos adapted.

His clothes arrived pressed. He held sway over the phone schedule and over who earned the private two-man cells instead of the dormitories.

In the spring of 1985, Jack Ronald Van Laningham arrived at Texarkana to serve eight years for bank robbery. Van Laningham, fifty-six, with the worn look of a man who had hit bottom once too often, had robbed a small Tampa bank using a bag of dirty laundry and a television remote control.

He got away cleanly, then called the FBI to confess. The Tampa agents said they would never have found him.

Van Laningham wrote about his first sight of the little man: clothes pressed, shoes shined. Inmates gave Carlos their phone time and competed for his attention. One told Van Laningham, “He runs this place. A good friend to have.”

Within weeks Van Laningham read Carlos the newspaper each morning, since Carlos, at seventy-five, found small print difficult.

One day in March 1985, Carlos put the paper down and introduced himself.

“Hello, I’m Carlos Marcello.”

The friendship had not gone unnoticed.

FBI agent Thomas Kimmel supervised three federal prisons for the Bureau’s Washington office, Texarkana among them. The House Select Committee on Assassinations had concluded in 1979 that Carlos had “the motive, means, and opportunity to assassinate President Kennedy” and had forwarded a criminal referral to the Justice Department, where it sat.

Kimmel proposed an investigation into whether Carlos was still running his organization from prison. His brother Joseph, nominally in charge in New Orleans, had proven unable to manage it.

Kimmel recruited Van Laningham. An undercover agent named Tom Kirk posed as Van Laningham’s best friend, a shady businessman with Bureau of Prisons connections. The FBI moved Van Laningham into Carlos’s private cell.

Van Laningham bought a Panasonic radio at the prison commissary. Authorities took it away for “inspection” and returned it with a recording device inside. Agents tapped the phone lines as well.

Van Laningham wrote later: “I was really scared. If I was found out, I was dead.”

The FBI called it CAMTEX.

On December 15, 1985, Carlos and Van Laningham sat outside in the prison yard with a third inmate, a trusted man from New Orleans. Carlos had been raging about the Kennedys for weeks. This time he went somewhere he had not gone before.

A federal memo, confirmed in subsequent FBI documents, records what he said: “Yeah, I had the son of a bitch killed. I’m glad I did. I’m sorry I couldn’t have done it myself.”

Carlos stopped. He walked to the other side of the yard.

The New Orleans man turned to Van Laningham. “I don’t know about you, but I did not hear anything.”

Two days later, Carlos sat Van Laningham down and told him about an old Sicilian priest who had once offered him this counsel: if your enemies get in your way, bury them in the ground, let the grass grow over them, and go about your business.

Kimmel’s reports reached the Reagan Justice Department, which charged no one.

In March 1987, Santo Trafficante, seventy-two and pale from years of heart trouble, called his attorney Frank Ragano for a final conversation in Tampa.

Trafficante was facing surgery and wanted to speak somewhere microphones could not reach. During an hourlong drive in Ragano’s car, he turned to the Kennedy years.

“God-damn Bobby,” Trafficante told Ragano. “I think Carlos fucked up in getting rid of John. Maybe it should have been Bobby.”

“We shouldn’t have killed John. We should have killed Bobby.”

Four days later, Trafficante died at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston. He had never spent a night in an American prison.

On May 21, 1987, federal marshals drove Carlos from the comfortable Fort Worth facility his family had paid bribes to secure and returned him, under armed escort, to Texarkana.

CAMTEX was over. The bribe money and the tapes stayed in the files.

The strokes had begun in January 1989. By February 27, Carlos was at the federal medical center in Rochester, Minnesota, drifting in and out.

An attendant overheard him muttering: “That Kennedy, that smiling motherfucker, we’ll fix him in Dallas.” Agents questioned him that September. He denied everything.

On October 6, 1989, a federal appellate court reversed the BRILAB conviction. The government did not retry him.

Carlos came home. Former associates, including Frank Joseph Caracci, had absorbed what remained of his organization.

Joseph Marcello had not proved equal to the work. Carlos spent his final years at home as his mind failed him further.

March 2, 1993. Carlos Marcello is eighty-three years old. He is at home in Louisiana, in his own bed. It is a quiet winter morning. He has been asleep for hours, and today he will not wake up.

The Associated Press ran an obituary. It noted his name had “often been mentioned in connection with the assassination of President Kennedy” and that he had “never been charged.”

He had entered the United States in his mother’s arms in 1910 and sold tomatoes as a boy. Sixty years of work had made him untouchable. He outlived Robert Kennedy by twenty-five years.

He went to sleep.

John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy did not die that way.

September 1966.

Thirteen men descended on La Stella, an expensive Italian restaurant in the Forest Hills section of Queens, and took their places at a long table in the basement dining room.

At the head sat Michele Miranda, 75, twice charged with murder and twice cleared, whom the FBI named consigliere to one of the New York Mafia families.

Beside him sat Joseph Colombo and, next to Colombo, the tall, gaunt Carlo Gambino. Born in Palermo in 1902, Gambino would one day claim the title capo di tutti capi, boss of all Mafia bosses in America.

Carlos Marcello had come from New Orleans with his brother, Joseph, along with Santo Trafficante, the gruff leader of the Tampa branch of the syndicate.

They had ordered their drinks when New York police burst into the basement room and arrested all thirteen.

Each walked out on $100,000 bond. The government granted Carlos immunity before a grand jury; he testified.

Several days later, the Marcellos, Trafficante, and three other New Orleanians returned to La Stella. Reporters had gathered outside. They ordered minestrone, linguine with white clam sauce, striped bass, and espresso.

“Why don’t they arrest us again for eating here,” one of them remarked.

Santo Trafficante raised his wine glass.

The grand jury ultimately cleared all thirteen.

However, the La Stella arrest accomplished what ten years of federal effort had not. It put Carlos Marcello in a courtroom record alongside Carlo Gambino and Michele Miranda. Louisiana public officials had long denied the Mafia existed in their state. That argument was harder to maintain after Forest Hills.

A year later, the government charged that Carlos had bribed one of the jurors at his 1963 trial. A jury acquitted him of that charge too.

Carlos flew home to New Orleans International Airport, where reporters and FBI agents had gathered. Among them was Patrick Collins, a federal agent assigned to the Organized Crime unit.

The crowd swarmed Carlos as he crossed the terminal.

“Don’t you have enough damn pictures?” he snapped.

Collins stepped toward him.

“Are you looking for some f------ trouble?” Carlos asked.

What followed became a matter of contested testimony. Collins told the trial jury that Carlos jabbed at him and tried to land a haymaker. Carlos said he only gestured for the man to move.

His attorney, Mike Maroun, testified that Collins had told him over drinks that the whole incident was an accident and Carlos should never have faced those charges.

The jury in Laredo, Texas, seated there because the New Orleans publicity made a local trial impossible, could not agree. Houston did.

In 1968, a Houston jury convicted Carlos Marcello of assaulting a federal agent, his first conviction since the 1938 marijuana charge. A federal judge sentenced him to six months at the Federal Medical Center in Springfield, Missouri.

Dozens of prominent Louisianians wrote to the court before sentencing. Former Jefferson Sheriff William Coci told the judge Carlos had been “greatly maligned by the news media.”

The Reverend Bob Harrington, who called himself the Chaplain of Bourbon Street, informed the court that Carlos had long ago accepted “Christ as his Savior.”

Carlos served his term. He said later he needed the rest.

Three years after the Houston verdict, Carlos sat before a federal immigration panel for what felt like the tenth time in twenty years. He was sixty-three. His answers were patient, even plaintive.

He told the panel he had grown too old to adjust to a new country and wanted the matter settled once and for all. The people of Louisiana respected him, he said.

“People say why don’t you go to Italy, man,” Carlos told the panel in 1973. “You could live like a king. I say I have all my friends here.”

One immigration official suggested Marcello, with his millions, could do exactly that.

“I’ll fight to the last,” Carlos replied. “To stay. I want to stay in this country. This is the only country I know of.”

The panel did not deport him.

By the late 1970s, Carlos was in his late sixties.

He stood painfully erect, as though his five-foot-three frame required the effort. His shoulders remained wide, and a thick silver mane crowned a head his associates called disproportionately large. The downturned crescent of his scowl could break, in private, into a roguish grin.

He drove a bronze Cadillac to his office on Airline Highway every morning by eight.

The office building faced a parking lot and looked like it might house a bail bondsman: cheap brick, one-way glass.

Inside, Carlos sits at a large mahogany desk, facing an aerial photograph of Churchill Farms, the six thousand West Bank acres he bought in the mid-1950s for roughly fifty dollars each. Family photographs cover the walls. In one corner, a television blares.

He does not know that FBI agents broke into this room one night and hid a recording device in the ceiling above his desk.

The man across from him is Joseph Hauser, a Beverly Hills insurance executive with a $750,000 mansion and a fleet of luxury cars, who has already cut a deal to serve as a federal informant in exchange for leniency on his own fraud conviction.

Two more FBI agents, posing as Hauser’s associates, sit nearby.

Carlos talks freely.

“I got, like, St. Charles Parish,” he told Hauser on the tapes. “I got, like, Raceland and Thibodaux. I got like Morgan City, Franklin, Lake Charles, and on down. I know all those people.”

By the fall of 1979, he was deep inside a scheme to win Louisiana state insurance contracts through bribes and kickbacks. His co-defendant was Charles E. Roemer II, the state’s former Commissioner of Administration.

The trial ran nineteen weeks in the spring of 1981. Jurors listened to hours of recorded conversations from the inner sanctum of the Airline Highway office. They convicted Carlos Marcello and Charles Roemer of conspiracy.

The sentence was seven years, the most severe since a twenty-year-old produce hauler named Calogero Minacore entered the gates of Angola State Prison in 1930.

To the end of the undercover operation, Carlos refused to believe that Hauser had been a government plant.

“No way, man,” he said, on one of the last recordings played at trial. “Cause I’d a heard it.”

He had not heard a thing.

The doctor found Carlos with severe dehydration and three cracked ribs. He recommended bed rest.

Since Mike Maroun had a travel visa, he volunteered to fly home for help while Carlos continued healing.

Carlos Marcello had better places to be than the Capitol of Honduras.

Abandoned inside the Honduras border, Carlos and his attorney wandered lost in a jungle until two “banditos” approached them yelling in a language the Americans could not understand.

Carlos reminded Mike Maroun of the three-thousand dollars in their wallets and threw himself and Mike Maroun down a hillside to escape the highwaymen.

But on this day, his case officer told him to sit.

Carlos does not sit. He stands in the doorway. Something is off. The case officer, cordial most days, now won’t look him in the eye.

Two uniformed men step in from the hallway. One of them takes Marcello’s wrist, the handcuffs click, and the other officer reads a deportation order.

Carlos asks to consult with Philip Smith, the New Orleans attorney who accompanied him to the meeting.

The answer is no.

Carlos asks to stop at home for a suitcase and clothes.

Another no.

He asks to call his wife.

The answer is still no.

Fancy cars with out-of-state plates roll pass the Black Diamond Lounge and park in the shadows of dilapidated buildings and one dead cypress tree in the 300 block of North Galvez Street.

The Creole waiters and musicians in the bar served sit-downs before, but this night felt different. Maybe the caliber of men slipping into the backroom had more to discuss than the usual imported prostitutes, narcotics, or rigged novelty machines.

At the head of the table, a small man settles into his chair. Five feet two inches, with a broad Sicilian face and dark eyes that register everything but share nothing. When the man speaks, the words come in a rolling drawl part Sicilian, part Yat.

Most in the room know the man as Carlos Marcello.

Linda Donnelly turned onto Brookshire Avenue in Baton Rouge’s Sherwood Forest neighborhood just after 8 p.m. on January 15, 2019.

A large tree stands in the front yard of a corner lot on Brookshire. The streetlight reaches the grass but not the shadows beneath the branches. A shape near the trunk shifts. It separates from the dark and becomes a man.

When her great-grandmother Coralee asked why, Allison said only that her mom “looked funny.”

Coralee walked to the bedroom. The bed was empty.

She found Amelie Jane “Diddie” Cooper in the children’s room, half on and half off one of the twin beds. Naked from the waist down. Lingerie and quilted housecoat rolled up over her breasts.

Purple finger marks circled her throat. Blood soaked her hands and clothing, and a bloody foam had seeped from her nose.

Someone, Coralee later told police, had apparently dressed her with her clothes turned inside out.

Diddie Cooper was thirty years old.

Fourteen hours earlier, she had been at the Tulane-LSU game, sitting in the rain.

New Orleans knew Diddie Cooper. She hosted “A Date with Diddie,” a weekly variety show on WDSU-TV spotlighting local talent. The New Orleans States, January 13, 1954, called her an attractive young socialite from a prominent Louisiana family.

Accurate, to some degree.

Her father, Robert Woolfolk, was an investment banker; her mother, Ruth Samson Woolfolk, was an accomplished musician. Diddie, a singer like her mother, made her society debut after high school and attended H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College at Tulane.

She had been married before. On September 5, 1942, Diddie married Macrino Trelles, heir to a New Orleans cigar fortune, in a ceremony the papers put on the front page.

It didn’t last. She divorced Trelles in 1947 and four years later married James Leland Cooper.

Jimmy Cooper was clean-shaven and expensively dressed, his red hair dyed to a shade slightly too vivid for his age, his hairline retreating above a look the papers called smug.

He was born in Clara, Mississippi, studied medicine briefly in Chicago, and in 1932 was arrested there in a stolen-car scheme.

After six months in the Cook County House of Corrections, he moved to New Orleans, managed theaters in the French Quarter, and eventually bought the Court of Two Sisters restaurant on Royal Street.

During the war, he served as a Quartermaster Corps captain. When he came home, the restaurant was thriving: his first wife, Mildred Schmidt Cooper, had kept it going while he was overseas.

Jimmy and Mildred divorced on June 21, 1951. Nine days later, he married Diddie.

He adored her children from her first marriage, Mackie and Allison. He paid for private school and summer camp. When Diddie gave birth to their son, Donald, in 1952, the newspapers described the Coopers as an ideal couple.

The staff at the Court of Two Sisters had a different read.

Jimmy drank. When he drank, he hit Diddie and described their private life to whoever was standing nearby. The couple separated before Donald’s birth but reconciled for the baby’s sake. After the birth, restaurant employees said Diddie seemed afraid to leave no matter how belligerent Jimmy became.

On May 6, 1952, she called the police. Officers found Jimmy drunk and took him to jail wearing only his undershorts and what New Orleans had already started calling a “wife-beater” shirt. The next morning, Diddie filed for formal separation.

By June, Jimmy had moved out of their apartment at 3211 Louisiana Avenue Parkway. He paid alimony and covered the rent. He also refused to consider divorce.

He showed up uninvited at Diddie’s parties and threatened to evict her if she wouldn’t take him back. Then begged her in front of her friends.

In October, after a Tulane-Georgia football game, Jimmy crashed a cocktail party Diddie hosted. She left her own apartment.

Later that night at Perez’s nightclub, he begged her guests to intercede on her behalf.

November 29, 1952 was cold and stormy. Diddie joined two other couples to attend another game, Tulane-LSU, in Tulane Stadium

Nobody invited Jimmy, but he came anyway.

At first, he seemed fine, sharing umbrellas and raincoats to the group.

Then Diddie refused to sit with him. She moved to the row in front with the other women and told him she had plans after the game. She warned she’d call the police if he followed.

Jimmy apologized. Said he hadn’t been drinking. Then asked whether her son could spend the night at his house.

Mackie loved him, called him Daddy, had stayed at Jimmy’s before. But this was a Saturday, the busiest night of the week at the Court of Two Sisters, especially after a Tulane-LSU game. There was no clear reason to bring the boy to Jimmy Cooper’s house that night.

But Diddie said yes anyway.

After the game, she went home to change shoes, ditching the pair soaked from the rain before joining friends at Charlie’s Steak House on Dryades Street. Later the group moved to the Key Club on Louisiana Avenue for dancing.

By 2:00 a.m., Diddie sat across the street from her home having coffee with neighbors.

Crossing back home, she realizes she has left her hat and yells back. She will pick it up in the morning. Her neighbors watch her climb the stairs to her apartment.

At 2:10 a.m., the babysitter, Cecile Plantagenet, locked the front door and caught a cab home.

At approximately 3:15 a.m. that Sunday morning, Grandma Coralee heard a scream.

The sketch showed a hold-up man wanted for the murder of Thomas Gagliano, shot dead in his own New Orleans bar in 1958. None of the men were right.

Then a Tickfaw police officer named Louis Pigno walked over to his car. Pigno said he recognized the face in the sketch. A man called “Nofi” played poker every Wednesday night in the back room of Angelo Nicotre’s bar, right there in Independence. Holmes put down his keys and stayed another week.

The man Holmes was looking for had shot Thomas Gagliano dead on May 14, 1958. Gagliano was 36 years old. He had run a bar called the T&M at 210 North Dorgenois Street in Mid-City New Orleans for seven months.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune described the shooting as a botched holdup. An anonymous telephone tip told police the assailant was a transfer truck driver. That tip sent Holmes in the wrong direction for six weeks. The record does not show who made the call.

The night of the murder, a man in a Panama hat walks into the T&M shortly after midnight and orders a drink. He leaves. He comes back at closing time, orders another glass, and levels a .25 caliber revolver at Gagliano.

Then the shots came.

Residents at the corner Labruzza Lane and Fontana Road called 911.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find 42-year-old Daytra Miller and her 13-year-old son, Robert West II, dead inside their home. The house was still quiet when deputies pushed through the door.

Daytra had lived at that address for at least fifteen years. That was where she built her home, raised her children, and spent her days. Her aunt, Gloria McGee, described her her as “hard-working, very respectful, full of life, and very loving.”

McGee said Robert was an honors student. “Just an angel, a joy to be around. So loving, respectful. A life cut short.”

ON SEPTEMBER 1, 1932, two bandits with shotguns forced W. E. Mount, president of the Merchants & Farmers Bank of Ponchatoula, into his car along with his two daughters. Ruby and Clarabelle were eleven and twelve years old.

What followed was a running gunfight past Springfield, a roadblock of three hundred armed citizens and deputies, and four days of searching through Livingston Parish swamp. The kidnappers were never caught.
